What does a guy who has won MT’s Truck of the Year title do once his beloved truck gradually phases away from the spotlight? Well, that all depends on the guy and truck, now doesn’t it?
Ron Perkins is the gent we speak of, and his truck was a little Nissan Frontier known as the Irregular Cab. It was called that because Nissan never made a single cab Frontier but Ron has one. He had to chop the sh*t out of a standard issue King Cab to get it, but he got what he wanted. So to stick to the tradition of making what others can’t buy, let us formally introduce you to his latest piece of custom truckery – Deblazed, the unibody S-10 (formerly a Blazer. Get it?)
If you can’t tell by now, let us inform you – Ron likes his trucks to be badass and unique in every sense of the words. What’s the best starting point for a project like this? Well, he figured, “the first thing to do was to convert the Blazer into a pickup. This would be the main focal point of the truck, and if it didn’t end up working, I could always scrap it and only be out on the $550 and the tank of gas to move it.” Luckily, the experiment worked, and that five hundo ended up only being a minuscule drop into the seemingly bottomless money pit.
Thinking of trying this at home? If so, Ron has a valuable gem for ya, “a Blazer roof is actually an inch taller than a standard cab truck. I learned that the hard way. I had planned to just join the rear wall with the Blazer roof … no dice! I had to go back and buy a standard cab and cut it at the A-pillar.”
Although this “truck” has been out on the show circuit for a while now, which means plenty of eyeballs have had the opportunity to focus in on it. It’s been to SEMA, but wasn’t one of those “crunch builds” – well not because of procrastination anyway. Ron told us, “I dropped the truck of at a shop here in Portland in May, so it wasn’t a last minute deal. Long story short, the shop owner did some shady business deals and skipped town with my truck locked in the old shop. This was in September. I vented through Facebook and I got a huge response from friends here in the Northwest who were down to help get things done in those next couple months before SEMA.”
But Vegas was just a Sunday cruise for Ron. He’s pushed his truck all over the country for shows near and wide. “I started out wanting to build my ideal mini truck, but what happened was making the best of friends from coast to coast. I am truly grateful and forever in debt to everyone involved.” All sappiness aside, we’re anxious to see what Mr. Perkins whips up next for us to feature. It belter be good, Ron. It better be real good.
