A sub-subcompact with a high
headlamp-size-to-wheel-size ratio, the Chevrolet Spark has a design that
already suggests “electric car.” To distinguish the Spark EV from the
gasoline-powered Spark, Chevy adds Volt-like energy waves stenciled in the
redesigned nose, a rear spoiler, fifteen-inch wheels, an active lower
air-intake shutter, and a charging port.

General Motors’ first electric car since
the 1990s EV1 is available for sale or lease this summer in limited markets.
Its 560-pound, 20-plus-kWh lithium-ion battery comprises 336 cells in four
modules and fits neatly ahead of the rear wheels. The fast-charging system can
juice it to 80 percent in twenty minutes.

The motor produces 400 lb-ft of
entertaining torque fed through a single-speed transmission, launching the car
with a whir such as one might hear from insects deep in a rain forest. It
cruises with faint powertrain noise and tire rumble. Steering is light and
pleasant, torque steer isn’t a factor, and regenerative brake-grab stays within
reasonable expectations. The biggest detriment is the awful dashboard
reflection in the windshield.

A “confidence screen” on the instrument
panel quells range anxiety. Trick smartphone apps work with OnStar to monitor
and manage charging, and an alert function emits broadband noise and harmonics
at speeds up to 18 mph for pedestrians who fail to notice those gargantuan
headlamps.
