It’s hardly a secret that a new S-Class is
on the way. We’ve seen camouflage prototypes from Mercedes-Benz’s Long Beach,
California, Technical Center driving around our headquarters for months. Now,
presume-ably filming a commercial in Los Angeles.

As you can see, the design is evolutionary
and incorporates all the new themes from the latest SL-, E-, and CLA-Classes.
We understand that, unusually, Mercedes developed the long-wheelbase model
first to satisfy major markets such as China where owners prefer to be
chauffeured, and the automaker will later shrink it to make a
standard-wheel-base mode.

Also reportedly on the table are a six-door
Pullman, a two-door replacement for the CL to be called either S-Class Coupe or
possibly SLC, a convertible version of that SLC, and even a “four-door coupe”
model like the CLS. We expect it will debut with V-6, V-8, and V-12
gasoline engines along with diesel models for Europe. More efficient gasoline
engines and mild and plug-in hybrid models are rumored in the near future.

Mercedes has released some interior
details, and the car is as posh as you’d expect. Ample ambient lighting, massive
digital display screens, heated armrests, an advanced air purification and
scenting system, and a simulated ho stone massage feature are among the
amenities. We’ve also heard there may be a camera-based suspension damping
system, called Magic Body Control that watches the road ahead and prepares the
suspension for every imperfection. Look for an expected mid-May debut.
