Diesel impressed, so now we try
petrol 4WD four-door in top spec
The new Audi A3 line-up is being stretched
further than ever thanks to this new saloon. And having driven the diesel in
Issue 1,273, we’ve now tried the top-spec 1.8-litre TFSI Quattro.
Audi
A3 Saloon 1.8 front
While the front-wheel-drive version is
available from launch, this Quattro model won’t arrive until December. It has
the same 178bhp power output, features a six-speed S Tronic auto box and claims
0-62mph in 7.3 seconds.
The engine is smooth, and has a nicely
tuned soundtrack, but in the real world the 148bhp 2.0 TDI feels quicker on the
move. That’s because the 1.8 TFSI delivers 70Nm less torque, at 250Nm, so it
doesn’t offer the diesel’s mid-range surge of acceleration.
Audi
A3 Saloon 1.8 side
Fuel economy is reasonably good, at
50.4mpg, but again the TDI has the edge, claiming 67.3mpg and 107g/km of CO2.
It costs just under $2,975 less, too, but does without our car’s 4WD.
From behind the wheel, you’d be hard
pressed to tell that this is the smallest and cheapest saloon Audi makes. Not
only is the cabin quality and design fantastic, but motorway refinement is just
as good as you’ll find in an A4.
Audi
A3 Saloon 1.8 back
Our flagship 5 line not only had four-wheel
drive, it also featured firmer, 25mm lower suspension than the standard model.
As a result it turns in quickly, corners flat and has plenty of traction.
It could be more engaging, though, and on
optional 19-inch wheels the ride felt overly firm. Smaller wheels and standard
suspension is probably the best combination for most drivers.
Audi
A3 Saloon 1.8 interior
Going for the S line package does smarten
up the looks, and in our eyes the saloon is one of the most attractive Audis on
the road. A slightly more aggressive bodykit and stylish LED running lights are
standard and help cap off the saloon’s all-new bodywork.
The four-door uses the same wheelbase as
the A3 Sportback, but the boot is 45 liters bigger, at 425 liters. And while
there’s enough rear legroom for tall adults, headroom is a bit tight.
Good: Refinement and quality are
top-notch-anyone downsizing from an A4 won’t be disappointed.
Not so good: An A3 Sportback is just as
spacious and costs about $1,488 less than the saloon.

Verdict
While Audi expects the A3 saloon to be a
hit in the US and China, it’s not destined to be as popular here, where hatches
are king. It’s a fine car, but the A3 Sportbak is almost as spacious and feels
just as capable. This engine wouldn’t be our first choice, either – it’s
expensive, and if you want a hot 4WD A3 saloon. Wait for the S3 to arrive early
next year.
