Yamaha became the world’s first major manufacture to adopt the revolutionary iStream car creation process invented and developed by South African former F1 guru, Gordon Murray. Called Yamaha Motiv, in both petrol and electric versions, it’s specifically engineered for Europe and when it reaches production, it will be the first head-on challenge for the Smart micro-car in 12 years. Displayed as a concept in Tokyo, it was fully developed and engineered over the past 15 months after Yamaha and Gordon Murray Designs discussed co-operating as long ago as 2008 before progress was interrupted by the recession. Gordon Murray’s central theme with iStream has always been to free car production from the inflexibility and crippling investment by using relatively simple and far less expensive tubular steel frames. Motiv’s ultra-modern styling is the combined work of a GMD-Yamaha design team.
