What is it? Entry-level diesel
version of Kia’s new seven-seater
Verdict: This is the pick of the Carens
range
Kia’s new Carens is a stylish and practical
seven-seater, but it’s up against some very capable rivals. In our first test
of the car, we tried the range-topping 134bhp 1.7-liter diesel, which is a
strong performer. It’s available only in mid and top-spec trims, so it’s priced
to take on more spacious and better-to-drive opposition, such as the Seat
Alhambra.

Now we’ve driven the less expensive
versions of the Carens. The 1.6-liter petrol is the cheapest of all, but the
engine feels weedy and needs to be worked hard.

The pick of the range is undoubtedly the
114bhp 1.7-liter diesel, which turns out to be nearly as able a performer as
the higher-powered version, and is actually slightly more flexible. It’s more
economical, too, and if you go for entry-level 1 trim it costs just $28,942.

The suspension soaks up bumps and potholes
well, and it’s impressively refined. It’s not the most thrilling car to drive,
admittedly, but with this engine and trim combination it’s certainly a tempting
package.
