KIA’s first real performance oriented
hatches, in slinky three-door Proceed GT and the more sensible five-door Ceed
GT guises have been unveiled. And on first impression, it’s definitely a case
of look out Golf GTI. The two GTs are powered by a 1.6 liter turbocharged
engine. But despite having 150kW and 265Nm of torque, Kia is only claiming a
modest 7.9 seconds for the 0-100kph sprint A six-speed manual gearbox will be
standard, with no mention of future inclusion for Kia’s twin-clutch gearbox.

Design chief Peter Schreyer has trod a
delicate line between hot hatch aggression and range-topping style. Quad LED
driving light clusters give the GT a new take on the tired ‘necklace’ design,
and the jutting lower grille is edged at the base with a Golf GTI-aping red
stripe. Red brake calipers sit behind the standard 18in alloys, but the overall
effect appears restrained rather than shouty.

The new cars will be up against Ford’s new
Focus ST, starting at R310k and offering 184kW from its 2.0 liter turbo engine.
And VW’s Mk7 Golf GTI is just around the corner too. . .
The pair have not been confirmed for local
introduction, but are under consideration
