BMW unveiled the third generation Mini in Oxford last Tuesday, shortly before the car broke cover at the Tokyo motor show and then appeared on the other side of the world at the LA motor show. It should arrive in SA next autumn.

The new three-door hatchback has – you guessed it – evolutionary styling, increased dimensions, new technology, a new platform and a range of new three-cylinder engines also to be used in BMW models.

Completely new from the group up, the new Mini is longer, wider and taller with wheelbase up by 42mm, track increased by 42mm at the front and 34mm at the rear for improved cabin and boot space, even if  that all flies in the face of the brand’s promise of being small.

The all-new all-turbocharged engine line-up includes a new 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol in the Cooper, a 1.5-liter three-pot diesel in Cooper D and a 2-liter petrol four in Cooper S, each with stop-start system and Euro 6 emission regulations. Power and torque happen lower in the rev range with 27% better fuel efficiency.

Three new transmissions include the standard six-speed manual with rev-matching system for downshifts, while a six-speed automatic is optional on all models. A sports auto is also optional offers shorter shift times.

Mini is yet to confirm other engines, but lower-powered triples in the One and One D are likely to follow later in 2014, as well as a higher-powered diesel for the Cooper SD and a more potent version of the Cooper.
