Peugeot’s new 2008 is hoping to attract the
same B-segment crossover sales success as the Nissan Juke. Sitting right in the
middle of the three-strong diesel engine launch line-up is this 92bhp 1.6
e-HDi, and it’s tipped to be the biggest seller.
Despite
the 4x4 looks, all 2008s are front-wheel drive.
It’s a competent engine, which works well
with normal use. Acceleration is clean, torque is healthy in the mid-range and
there’s enough power for motorway overtakes. The six-speed manual gearbox is
also easy to get along with, featuring well-spaced gear ratios despite the
soft-roading credentials of the car.

Peugeot’s new Grip Control system is
standard on the top two trim levels, Allure and Feline. The system is combined
with all-weather tires to manage the car’s on-board traction setting to match
five selectable terrains. With no all-wheel drive option, the 2008 needed a
system of this sort to help it overcome off-road obstacles. Overall, it works
well on slippery surfaces, although there’s no doubt that the hybrid tires play
a big part in its traction-finding ability.
The
touch-screen infotainment system standard on all but the entry-level trim also
disappoints, because it's fiddly to use on the move and there are no shortcut
buttons to help you negotiate its menus.
A stylish cabin gets touches such as
roof-level interior lighting and a large central sunroof to add to the illusion
of space. But the steering wheel feels too small, and adjusting it to suit
anyone of above-average height will partially obscure the dashboard. That’s a
real shame, because the dash is where Peugeot has made its biggest leap in
quality and design.
The
2008 feels most at home in town, where its small size, elevated driving
position and light steering all combine to make maneuvering easy
The 2008 can’t match the Juke’s fun factor,
but it is better packaged than a Mini Countryman and its stylish design means
you’ll never be short of attention.
The
2008 is also more practical than a Juke, because adults can ride in the back
without feeling cramped. The Peugeot has a bigger boot, too
