The new Skoda Superb gets you to work and back in comfort and style

The commute is as important as the time spent in office itself. That may sound odd, but think about it - it is a time for you to prepare for the day ahead, as well as a time to wind down and relax on your way home. It’s a period of transition, helping you to switch from home-mode to work-mode and vice versa. It is thus vital to make sure that this transition happens in the smoothest and most comfortable manner possible, especially when your performance at work has a direct impact on the hundreds of people working for you. You need to be at peace, you need to have your own space and you need to be able to do your own thing. In other words, you cannot just have any old mode of transportation.

Enter the new Skoda Superb. This is a car that has long been the benchmark for rear-seat comfort, and everything about it has been designed to cocoon its occupants in luxury. To illustrate the point, we invited Jayen Shah to experience the car. Head, Fixed Income Sales, Fixed Income and Treasury of IDFC Ltd. (India), one of the country's leading integrated infrastructure financial institutions, Shah is a man of many interests, and one who takes his spare time just as seriously as his work. He loves hiking, and has spent a lot of time trekking to several places in the Himalayas. He is also an avid traveller and is currently busy planning his next family holiday, to various Scandanavian countries. He also told us that he has recently been dabbling in amateur astronomy!

His daily commute is around 20 km; in Mumbai’s traffic, that is easily two hours of travelling every day. He spends his time on the way to office to get started on his work — checking emails, making calls and so forth – and on the way back, he likes to read and unwind a bit.

Not surprisingly, he likes the Skoda Superb for the kind of space it offers. ‘With the front passenger seat pushed forward, there is enough space to stretch out as much as I like, and even with it pushed back, my knees aren’t anywhere close to it. I also like the fact that I can shut out the city when I’m in the car, thanks to the retractable blinds on the rear windows.’ We’re guessing this has more to do with him being able to work on his important projects, without prying eyes looking at his computer screen!

‘I prefer being chauffeur-driven, for two reasons – it’s too stressful to drive in Mumbai traffic, and I need to get a lot of work done while on the move’ says Shah. Well, the new Skoda Superb is the ideal chauffeur-driven car. The McPherson strut suspension setup at the front and multi-element axle at the rear, makes for a very comfortable and pliant drive experience. Then there are the AC vents on the B-pillars in the rear, that are conveniently located, just an arm's length away and that help maintain just the right temperature to keep you comfortable. Let’s not forget the touch-screen entertainment, the rear blinds, the umbrella in the door and a range of comprehensive safety features. ‘This car is a very pleasant place to be in’ says Shah. ‘I was able to concentrate on whatever I was doing in a hassle-free way, and I almost didn’t notice the time it took to commute to and fro.’ The Superb’s high levels of refinement, its excellent fit and finish and its world-class engines ensure that it is the kind of car that discerning people like Shah find appealing. With the recent refresh, the new Skoda Superb is also a very good-looking car. The bi-xenon headlights with AFS (Adaptive Front light System with LEDs), the sharper nose and the bolder lines all make it stand out from its competition.

The new Skoda Superb is a terrific car to go travelling in. ‘I really appreciate this car’s boot – with that much space, a family driving holiday should be easily accomplished.’ You can store a lot of luggage in the boot, that uses Skoda's Patented, twin-door technology, which opens as a hatch or a notch, depending on the size and shape of your luggage. For people like Shah, who loves to travel, this is always an indispensable asset. With its impeccable build quality, the Superb will be able to handle anything you throw in its path, and Shah approves of it as a versatile car that he can use on weekdays as well as weekends. This isn’t surprising, really - whether you’re being driven around or whether you prefer to take the wheel, the Superb is a true joy to be in.
