Pharrell
Williams has already had his fair share of fashion collaborations and design
projects, but his latest one is all about being environmentally conscious with
a special message. Collaborating with denim brand G-Star Raw, the singer has
designed a new collection made specifically from yarn taken from plastic found
polluting the sea which is processed by eco company Bionic Yarn. Titled 'Raw
for the Oceans', Pharrell stated that the new collection was an "obvious
choice" for him to make: "Working with G-Star was an obvious
choice, because they have a legacy of pushing the boundaries of
fashion and denim forward. Bionic Yarn is a company built around
performance, and denim is the perfect category to show the world what Bionic
Yarn can do. Everyone has jeans in their closet... "We (Bionic Yarn and
G-Star Raw) are trying to infiltrate the entire spectrum of fashion, high-end
and low."
The
'Happy' singer points out that tackling the ocean's pollution problem is
"a huge place to start". He believes the collection not only draws
attention to the issue, but even uses the current waste products to send a
stronger message to those who view the items. He adds that it's all about
stopping people from doing further damage to the sea: "It's a part of
sustainability and the cause is to never throw anything (plastics and trash)
into the ocean again. The ocean is just one part of the earth we're
concentrating on, but the world is made up of 75 to 80 per cent water."
