Every household has at least one fridge and most refrigerators are designed to store eggs, bottled drinks and other small items on the door shelves, as opposed to being placed on the shelves within the fridge itself.

And most people would open the fridge daily, staring at the items on the door shelf, trying to decide what to take out.

This wastes plenty of energy due to the escaping cold air.

In come brands such as Samsung and LG, which have designed a door within a door, for just this purpose.

Called ShowCase refrigerators, Samsung's implementation is simple. If you pull open the regular handle, the door opens as per normal, with the shelves on the door and items in the fridge within reach.

If you reach for the ShowCase handle, a smaller panel on the door opens, revealing the shelves connected to the door, but this time seen from the other side that is facing away from the fridge chamber.

Users can reach in and grab their eggs or snacks that they normally place on these door shelves and pull out the bottles of drinks placed there.

The energy-saving bit works because the shelves, filled with items, actually act as a wall that prevents the cool air within the fridge from leaving the confines of the chamber.

This new model refrigerator also has a touchscreen temperature control panel that lets users regulate the temperature of different sections of the fridge independently of one another.
