3.1. Re-Enabling the IP Modem Icon inside Desktop Manager for Windows

What if you're IP Modem icon disappeared; how could you I get it back?

First, you should be sure to contact your carrier to see if you can use Desktop Manager's IP Modem feature. If their answer is yes, follow these steps to edit the ip_modem_configuration.xml file. If your carrier says no, following these steps will likely not work; please use the software recommended by your carrier.

  1. Locate the ip_modem_configuration.xml file. It is probably best to use the Windows search feature or Google Desktop to find this file, but you may find it in one of these places:

    • Vista: C:\ProgramData\Research In Motion\BlackBerry

    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Research in Motion\BlackBerry

  2. Open the file using a text-only editor such as Windows Notepad or Wordpad.

  3. Locate your wireless carrier's name. Take note that carrier names with ampersands like AT&T will be listed as "AT&T".

  4. Change enabled="false" to enabled="true" as shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5. Use text based editor to edit connection string.
  5. Save your changes, and restart Desktop Manager. The Icon should reappear. If it does not, restart your computer, and try again.
