Setup Analysis Tool

Also designed primarily for application developers, the Setup Analysis Tool in the ACT can detect potential compatibility issues in setup programs, including the following:

  • Installation of kernel mode drivers

  • Installation of 16-bit components

  • Installation of Graphical Identification and Authentication (GINA) DLLs

  • Changes of files or registry keys that are under Windows Resource Protection (WRP)

ACT is the primary tool for administrators seeking to research compatibility problems in preparation for a large-scale Windows 7 workstation deployment. Version 5.6 of the package now includes a sample Stock Viewer application that you can use to test some of the included tools.

EXERCISE 1 Installing ACT 5.6

ACT is available as a free download from Microsoft Download Center.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.

  2. In a browser window, in the address box, type the following URL and press Enter: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=24DA89E9-B581-47B0-B45E-492DD6DA2971&displaylang=en.

  3. Download the ApplicationCompatibilityToolkitSetup.exe file and save it to a folder on your computer.

  4. Double-click the ApplicationCompatibilityToolkitSetup.exe file to execute it. The Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6 Setup Wizard appears, displaying the Welcome page.

  5. Click Next. The End-User License Agreement page appears.

  6. Select the I Accept The Terms In The License Agreement check box and click Next. The Destination Folder page appears.

  7. Click Next to accept the default folder name. The Ready To Install Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6 page appears.

  8. Click Install. The wizard installs the toolkit and displays the Completed page.

  9. Click Finish. The wizard closes.

EXERCISE 2 Configuring ACT 5.6

Before you can use the Application Compatibility Manager application, you must configure it to use a SQL Server database.

  1. Click Start. Then click All Programs | Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit | Application Compatibility Manager. The Microsoft Application Compatibility Manager window appears and launches the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) Configuration Wizard.

  2. Click Next to bypass the Welcome page. The Select The Configuration Option page appears.

  3. Leave the Enterprise Configuration option selected and click Next. The Configure Your ACT Database Settings page appears, as shown in Figure 10.

  4. In the SQL Server drop-down list, select your computer and click Connect.

  5. In the Database text box, type ACT and click Create. The wizard creates a new database instance.

  6. Click Next. The Configure Your Log File Location page appears.

  7. In the Path text box, browse to a folder on your computer. Click Next to accept the default Share As value. The Configure Your ACT Log Processing Service Account page appears.

  8. Click Next to accept the default Local System option. The Congratulations page appears.

  9. Click Finish. The Microsoft Application Compatibility Monitor console appears.
