Creating an App Group
If you examine the default Start screen, you
notice a gap between the four “lifestyle” apps (News, Sports, Travel,
and Finance) on the right, and the rest of the apps on the left. This
gap tells you that these two sections of the Start screen represent
special collections of apps called app groups. You can make
the Start screen much easier to navigate and apps much easier to find
by creating your own groups of related apps. You can also apply a name
to your groups, which makes the Start screen even easier to work with.
Follow these steps to create an app group:
1. Drag the first tile
you want to include in the group to the left side of the Start screen
until you see a vertical bar appear, as shown in Figure 2, and then drop the tile. Windows 8 creates a new group on the left side of the Start screen.
Figure 2. Drag the first group tile to the left side of the screen until you see the vertical bar.
2. For each tile you want to include in the group, drag it to the left side of the screen and then drop it inside the new group.
3. Press Ctrl+- (hyphen) or pinch the screen to zoom out.
4. If you want your group to appear elsewhere in the Start screen, drag the group to the position you prefer.
5. Right-click the group and then click Name Group. Windows 8 displays a dialog box for naming the group, as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Right-click the group and then click Name group to give your new group a name.
6. Type the name you want to use and then click Name.
7. Click the screen. Windows 8 zooms back in and your new group is done.
The name now appears at the top of the group. Rename the group at any time by repeating steps 5–7.
