Once opened, we visited the Infiniti Cape Town dealer on two occasions, the first for the FX30d’s scheduled 15 000 km service and the second to attend to a few niggles. As this dealership doesn’t have a workshop, the vehicle was sent to a nearby Nissan franchise for its service.

Towards the end of our year spent with the FX, we started noticing mechanical noises emanating from the front suspension in lock-to-lock turns. During the return visit to the dealership, we asked that the extremely weak air-conditioning system and erratic seat warmers also be inspected.

One of the advantages of being one of only a handful of Cape Town-based Infiniti “owners” in the first few months of operation was friendly and efficient service from the new and enthusiastic dealership.

The suspension noises were eliminated with torqueing of all the bolts, and the climate-control system was reportedly re-gassed and seat warmers scanned for efficiency. That the former still struggled to cope with even mild fluctuations in outside temperatures, together with the somewhat erratic workings of the electric tailgate towards the end of the test, proved a little concerning.

One area of focus in the planning for the next-generation QX70 range is to improve interior space and packaging. While Infiniti should strive to maintain the QX70 range’s distinctive design language, there’s little doubt that it needs to offer increased versatility and greater luggage and rear-passenger space in the next generation in order to be more competitive.

Standard 21-inch wheels lift the FX package, although 265/45 tires do create intrusive road noise.

Test Summary

Infiniti SA general manager, George Stegmann, proudly announced at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show that Infiniti had achieved the goals set for its first year of sales in South Africa. This included the opening of four dealerships and readying the arrival of the Q50.

In the FX/QX70 SUV, Infiniti SA would have hoped to secure the attention (and signatures) of buyers who fancy a vehicle that’s unlike anything in the market while offering the peace of mind that the backing of Nissan SA adds to the package.

A full house of standard luxury items provides good comfort for all occupants; comprehensive multimedia system is neat and intuitive.

There can be no denying that the QX70 has what it takes to be competitive in terms of comfort, refinement and performance. The only question is whether enough has/is being done to create awareness about this relatively unknown brand in order to tempt potential customers through those showroom doors.
