Edges are activated by
swipes. The top and bottom edges are reserved for application toolbars
or elements. The left and right edges are used for system
toolbars—notably the Charms bar.
Think of the Charms bar as a version of the
Windows 7 Start menu’s greatest hits, optimized for touch and gestures.
From top to bottom, the Charms bar exposes Windows 8’s powerful Search function, application data sharing through the Share charm, your current location, the Devices charm for managing and installing
devices (such as printers), and a Settings function—all in the
tile-based style. Settings captures the most important control panel
options.
The Charms bar is exposed by clicking the upper-right corner of the display or swiping from the right edge of the display.
To use the actions available at the left edge of your display
Swipe from the left edge to view the tab order bar for apps ,
then tap the app you wish to switch to. On a tablet when you swipe from
the left edge, you change to the next app in the tab order.
All the open apps in the order bar
Press +Tab to move forward in the tab order; press +Shift+Tab to move backward in the tab order.
To use the actions available at the right edge of your display
Swipe from the right edge to view the Charms bar on both the Start screen and the Desktop .
To use the actions available at the bottom edge of your display
In tile-based apps in the app itself or on the Start screen, swipe from the bottom edge to view an app toolbar.
To use the actions available at the top edge of your display
• To display an application toolbar or menu, swipe from the top edge.
• Drag the top edge to resize a window and move it to one side of the screen or the other, a procedure called snapping.
Tip
The new generation of touch mice and keyboards will allow you to emulate touch gestures in place of clicks and drags.
