Installing the Director role is similar to deploying any other role in
Lync Server 2013. Much of the installation process is actually spent
completing the prerequisite work, and installing the actual server can
be done fairly quickly. A Director can be introduced into the
environment at any time and does not necessarily need to be deployed
from the start. If Edge services are being deployed, it usually makes
sense to deploy a Director at the same time.
1. Prerequisites
A Director requires the same
prerequisite software as a Front End server because it is, after all,
still a subset of the Front End role. The different hardware, operating
system, and software prerequisites are discussed in this section.
Hardware Recommendations
This section discusses the minimum hardware recommendations for Lync Server 2013 servers.
The Lync Server 2013 Director processor recommendations are as listed here:
• Dual processor, quad-core 2.0 GHz or faster
• Four-way processor, dual-core 2.0 GHz or faster
Note
Lync Server 2013 is only a 64-bit application
and requires a 64-bit capable processor. This is generally not an issue
with any modern hardware, but be sure to verify any legacy hardware
supports a 64-bit operating system before attempting to use it for a
Director.
The Lync Server 2013 Director memory recommendation is as follows:
• 8GB RAM
The Lync Server 2013 Director disk recommendations are as shown here:
• 10K RPM HDD
• High-performance solid-state drive (SSD) with performance equal to or better than 10K RPM HDD
• 2x RAID 10 (striped and mirrored) 15K RPM disks for database data files
The Lync Server 2013 Director network recommendations are as listed here:
• Dual 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) network adapters (recommended)
• Single 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) network adapter (supported)
Note
When multiple network adapters are
being used, it is recommended to use them only for fault tolerance.
This means network adapters should be used for failover only and not be
combined for greater throughput.
Operating System Requirements
The Lync Server 2013 Director supports the following operating systems:
• Windows Server 2008 R2, Standard Edition with Service Pack 1
• Windows Server 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 1
• Windows Server 2008 R2, Datacenter Edition with Service Pack 1
• Windows Server 2012, Standard Edition
• Windows Server 2012, Datacenter Edition
The Windows Server Core, Web, and
High Performance Computing editions for any operating system version
are not supported for deployment.
Software Requirements
The Lync Server 2013 Director requires the following components to be installed:
• Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
• Windows Management Framework 3.0
• Windows Identity Foundation
• Visual C++ 11 Redistributable
Server Roles and Features
In addition to the operating system and
software requirements listed previously, a Director requires a number
of Windows server roles, role services, and features to be installed.
The IIS role services required for a Director installation are provided
here:
• Static Content
• Default Document
• Directory Browsing
• HTTP Errors
