Jeep’s controversially styled 2014 Cherokee officially debuted at the 2013 New York
International Auto Show in late March. Replacing the badly dated Liberty, the
CUSW-based Cherokee promises to live up to the reputation of its namesake on-an
off-road, with the choice of four-or six-cylinder power, and three
four-wheel-drive-systems, two of which offer a low range.

a wheelbase between 106.3 and 107.0 inches (more on that in a bit) the Cherokee
is about 5 inches longer than the Liberty, riding on an incrementally longer
wheelbase. Critical off-road capability measurements, such as ground clearance
and approach, break over, and departure angles, match or surpass those of the
Liberty, and its low-range ratio of 2.92:1 is shorter than the Liberty’s 2.72:1
ratio.

Underhood, the Cherokee gets a choice of
the Dart’s “Tigershark” 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing 184hp and 171 lb-ft
of torque, or a smaller-bore 3.2-liter version of Chrysler’s Pentastar V-6
producing 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to Chrysler’s version
of the ZF 9HP nine-speed automatic transmission, dubbed 948TE in Mopar-speak.
Final EPA figures have not yet been released, but Jeep is touting the
front-drive, four-cylinder Cherokee’s highway fuel economy figure of 31 mpg.

models also get full LED taillights and a distinctive (and controversial) LED

As with big brother Grand Cherokee, the
Cherokee will be offered in an off-road-oriented Trailhawk edition with the
107-inch wheel-base, ostensibly to accommodate the Trailhawk’s trim-exclusive
locking rear differential.

Although positioned below the Grand
Cherokee, the 2014 Cherokee doesn’t skimp on the premium features, including an
available 8.4-inch center tough-screen display with navigation, configurable
TFT display in the gauge cluster, built-in apps such as Aha, iHeart Radio, and
Pandora, available heated and cooled front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
All models also get full LED taillights and a distinctive (and controversial)
LED daytime running light brow. The 2014 Cherokee is also the first Chrysler
product to get park assist as an option.
