The spectacular new gull-winged Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept created by Mercedes design for inclusion in Sony’s Gran Turismo 6 was a surprise unveiling in the flesh at the opening of Mercedes-Benz’s new R&D center in Sunnyvale, California ahead of the Los Angeles motor show. Sadly in spite of the full-scale model, the two-seater will remain a figment of the virtual world as the first in a series of Vision gran Turismo virtual concepts. Mercedes’ stylists working under chief Gorden Wagener (see S-Class story elsewhere this issue) drew inspiration from the iconic 300 SL to give the Vision exaggerated proportions, including a long probing nose and a cabin well back within the wheelbase for an instantly aggressive appearance for the 415kW and 800Nm biturbo V8 monster, which weighs just 1385kg for a 311kW per ton power-to-weight ratio unrivalled in the super sports car segment ‘to guarantee exceptionally dynamic performance’.
