Data Collector Sets are a great new feature
available in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. System
Data Collector Sets have preconfigured counters that enable you to
easily run a test on your system and check its performance.
Note
Data Collector Sets are part of the Reliability and
Performance Monitor in Windows Server 2008 and part of the Performance
Monitor in Windows Server 2008 R2.
Figure 1 shows the Performance Monitor in Windows Server 2008 R2.

The display pane in Figure 29-4 shows the contents of a report from a System Performance Data Collector Set.
You can use the following steps to manually run the System Data Collector Sets.
Steps | Actions |

1. Start the Reliability and Performance Monitor. | Launch the Reliability and Performance Monitor (or the Performance Monitor in Windows Server 2008 R2) from the Administrative Tools menu. |
2. Access the System Data Collector Set. | Expand the Data Collector Sets and System. |
3. Start the System Performance Data Collector Set. | Right-click the System Performance Data Collector Set and select Start. This runs for 1 minute and stops automatically. |
4. Start the System Diagnostics Data Collector Set. | When the System Performance Data Collector Set stops, right-click the System Diagnostics Data Collector Set and click Start. This runs for 10 minutes and stops automatically.
Note
You cannot run two Data Collector Sets at the same time.

5. View the System Performance report. | While the System Performance Data Collector Set is running, expand Reports, System, and System Performance. Select the report you just ran. The report looks similar to Figure 1.

The summary shows key information about the usage of the CPU, disk, memory, and NIC.

6. View the System Diagnostics report. | When the System Diagnostics Data Collector Set stops, view its report. You can see it in the Reports, System, System Diagnostics node. |
