Automakers revive old nameplates all the time, but it’s rare that the new version of a car is slavishly true to the original. The all-new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is one of those cars.

The Z/28 utilizes the outgoing Corvette Z06’s 7.0-liter naturally aspirated LS7 V-8, from which Chevrolet promises at least 500 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Both the engine and Tremec TR606 six-speed manual transmission-the only one available-have dedicated high-capacity cooling systems.

For high-speed stability, the Z/28 features a full aerodynamic package including a front splitter, underbody panel, fender flares, extended rocker panels, and a rear spoiler and diffuser. The smaller 19-inch wheels reduce unsprung weight by a total of 42 pounds and reduce their rotational inertia. All four corners of the Z/28 are shod with 305/30ZR19 Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires said to be the widest front tires on any production car. Adjustable shocks allow for individual changes to jounce and rebound settings. Chevrolet claims the suspension tuning and tires facilitate maximum lateral acceleration of 1.05 g. Brakes are massive 15.5-inch front Brembo carbon-ceramic matrix units (saving 28 pounds total) clamped by six-piston calipers in the front, while 15.3-inch rotors with four-piston calipers sit in the back. The Z/28 reportedly runs 3 seconds quicker than a ZL1 around GM’s Milford Race Course.

For even more lightning, the rear seat design and material were changed, and the trunk pass-through was eliminated. Foglights, trunk carpeting, a tire inflator kit (except in states required by law), sound deadening, and HID headlights are gone. In all, the Z/28 is 100 pounds lighter than a comparable SS coupe and 300 lighter than the ZL1 coupe. The front seats are Recaros with cutouts to accommodate five-point harnesses. Even air-conditioning is a stand-alone option.
