Based on the Superb C-Max Hybrid, already a better small wagon than the Toyota Prius V, the Ford C-Max Energi proves equally compelling as a plug-in hybrid.

With combined EPA fuel efficiency of 100 mpg-equivalent and a gas-electric range of 620 miles, the Energi emulates a battery-electric vehicle around town, up to twenty-one miles in the selectable e-mode, then can head for a vacation carrying recreational gear and luggage. It tops out at 85 mph on batteries only, 23 mph higher than the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s electric-only speed. By reading the navigation system, the car determines when you’re nearing a frequently visited place, like the office, or starting the homebound leg of a journey. It then directs the car to stay in e-mode for greater efficiency.

This efficiency does come at a cost. The bulky 7.6-kWh lithium-ion pack diminishes rear cargo space 22 percent behind the second row and 19 percent behind the front row. Recharging takes 2.5 hours with a 240-volt supply or seven hours with 120-volt. Like the C-Max Hybrid, the Energi almost seamlessly integrates electric and internal-combustion power sources. The well-integrated regenerative brakes are as mellow as we’ve encountered. Suspension components are slightly recalibrated, although at 3899 pounds, the Energi is 259 pounds heavier than the Hybrid and feels weak-kneed and fat-bottomed on undulant roads.

A smartphone app allows remote management of charging functions. Options include a hands-free lift gate, automated parking, and premium audio and navigation. The base price is $7,750 more than the C-Max Hybrid, and our tester came in at $36,635 with options. That’s a hefty chunk of change, but Ford thinks its target market, those cherished early adopters, will find value in the C-Max Energi.

Special Energi badging is subtle, although the charge port features a state-of-charge illumination with an encircling LED indicator.
