Manage Newsfeed Settings
Scenario/Problem:
You want to change the settings of your newsfeed, so that on certain
events—for example, someone mentioning you in a microblogging
update—you get notified by email. Also, you want to configure what is
shared with other people who follow you. You might also want to
configure the newsfeed so that when someone uses a specific hashtag in
their microblogging posts, you want that post to be shown to you in
your newsfeed.
Solution: To configure your newsfeed settings, navigate to the Edit Details page
and click on the three dots in the tab list (to the right of Details).
A drop-down menu opens with additional tabs—one of them is the Newsfeed
Settings tab, as shown in Figure 1.
FIGURE 1 Selecting the Newsfeed Settings tab in the Edit Details page.
The following sections explain what you can configure on this page.
Manage Followed Hashtags
Under the Followed #Tags section of the
Newsfeed Settings tab, you can see the list of hashtags in which you
have already specified an interest (either by adding them through this
page, or by clicking on them in a microblogging post). In the text box
you can either type additional hashtags in which you are interested, or
delete the existing ones.
You can also specify who can see what hashtags you are following by using the Who Can See This drop-down menu.
Manage Email Notifications
In the Email Notifications section you can
configure the system to automatically send you an email when someone
starts following you, when someone mentions you, or when someone
replies to you, for example. To disable one or more of these alerts,
simply uncheck the box next to that option, and click Save at the
bottom of the page.
Manage What Information You Share
Under the People I Follow section you can
specify whether you want to allow other people to see who you are
following. This can be useful if you don’t want people to ask you why
you are following someone else and not them, for example.
The next option is to choose what
activities you do that will automatically be posted as a microblogging
update by you to people who follow you. For example, if you start following someone, anyone who is following you will automatically see that fact in their newsfeed unless you clear that box.
Create a Blog
Scenario/Problem: You want to create a site where you can write articles on topics related to your work and share them with your coworkers.
Solution:
A blog is the most appropriate type of site for this kind of
requirement. You can usually create a blog under your personal site if
the SharePoint administrator has allowed it.
To create a blog, navigate to your personal site and click on the Blog link on the left panel .
Clicking that link automatically creates a blog for you under your
personal site.
Use SkyDrive Pro to Share a Document
Scenario/Problem: You want to share a document with one or more colleagues, but not in an existing site or library.
Solution: SkyDrive Pro is a private document library in your personal site that
allows you to quickly share a document with people in your organization.
To get to SkyDrive Pro, click the
SkyDrive link at the top of any SharePoint page (if that link is not
available, your administrator has disabled this feature). This opens a
document library called Documents in your personal site to which you
can upload documents. By default, this library has a folder called
Shared with Everyone, which allows anyone in the organization to read
any document you upload. At this point you can either choose to upload
your document to that folder and send a link to your colleagues, or
upload it to another folder (for example the root folder) and use the
Share button to grant your colleagues permissions and send them a link
to the document .
