Mitsubishi I-Miev

First Mass- Produced E-Car

Mitsubishi's i-Miev was the first electric car that was mass-produced. It has two sister models with the same design: the Citroen CZero and Peugeot iOn. However, the production of the latter was discontinued in August 2012, whereas production of the i-Miev continues. The mini-car has a maximum speed of 130 km/h and can reach up to 150km with a fully charged battery. The batter/ can be charged in 8 hours with a 230 volt power point; it takes only half an hour to charge up to 80 percent at a ChadeMo boost charging station (which provides 300 to 600 volts). Similar to its sister models, the i-MiEV costs just under $36,532.

The Focus Electric launched in a few countries outside the US in late 2012. Other than the 107 kilowatt electric engine under the hood, this car Is Identical to the globally successful Focus. In spite of its high performance, the speed limit is 135 km/h. In any case, the specified 160 kilometer range is possible only at moderate speeds. Ford has specified the charging time at three or four hours without mentioning details about the current source — our calculations show that a 400 volt power point is required. Ford has also not specified an exact price; however, with its 23 kWh Lithium ion batteries, it should cost somewhere around $52,543.

The Nissan Leaf is the first electric vehicle to receive a five-star rating at the European New Car Assessment Program. The crash test offered 89 percent protection for adults in the front seat. This battery-operated car has been available in Japan and the US since late 2010. The Leaf can be fully charged within 6 to 8 hours using a 230V power point and just about in 30 minutes (80 percent) at a ChadeMo charging station. With a maximum range of 175 km and a maximum speed of 145 km/h, the Leaf is fairly suitable for day-to-day use. Priced at approx. $48,548, it is still a little too expensive for its obvious use as a family car. The Nissan Leaf is now available in Malaysia as part of a pilot program to introduce the car in Malaysia. "This pilot program involves creating awareness of Electric Vehicle and to give Malaysian Government, members of the media as well as the general public the opportunity to view electric vehicle," said the FAQ in the Nissan Malaysia website. You can register to participate as a Nissan Leaf ambassador and drive the car for 6 weeks. It's not available for sale yet.

Renault is promoting the Fluence ZE in European website as the limousine of the future. The battery-operated medium-sized vehicle has been available since the beginning of 2012 and has a maximum speed of up to 135 km/h. The vehicle needs to be fully charged for 6 to 8 hours using a 230 volt power point for it to reach its maximum range of 185 km. The price of roughly $32,540, plus approximately $104 as a monthly payment for the batteries initially sounds good, but since the payment covers only 10,000 kilometers of mileage per year, there is practically no chance to undercut the operating costs of a comparable diesel or petrol car. The European New Car Assessment Program gave the Fluence ZE a four-star rating for safety. The car is particularly popular in France, with 706 units registered through January 2013. The Fluence ZE is also the first electric car to be operational within the Better Place battery switch network.
