All-new iteration of Japan’s 3 Series promises to be sharper, sportier, cleaner and more distinctive than ever

Lexus chose the recent Detroit motor show to unveil an all-new IS sedan range, including a hybrid version of its 3 Series rival. Although powertrain details for SA are yet to be announced, expect two non-hybrid petrol-engine models, badged IS250 and IS350, to feature. Powering the IS250 is a 152kW 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. IS350 musters 233kW from its 3.5-litre V6 and adopts the eight-speed automatic transmission from the IS-F.

The first hybrid Lexus IS, badged IS300h, combines an electric motor with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. The total torque output is yet to be confirmed, but there’s 162kW of combined system power driving the rear wheels through a CVT gearbox. Lexus is aiming for a sub-100g/km CO2 output and fuel consumption in the region of 4.3L/100km, hoping figures like that will help close the gap on rivals like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4.

As for the interior, Lexus claims inspiration has come from the LFA supercar, but the bigger GS has clearly influenced the design too. Lexus hopes a wider track (+10mm) will help its quest for more agile handling, while a longer wheelbase (+70mm) should mean a significant increase in rear cabin space for passengers. Apparently the hybrid’s practicality won’t suffer despite the electric hardware either: the IS 300h’s battery has been located beneath the boot floor, so it doesn’t intrude on the load space length.

The 2013 Lexus IS incorporates new laser welding techniques aimed at increasing overall rigidity. The double wishbone front suspension has been revised to increase roll stiffness, while a quicker steering rack should ensure a more agile car. An even sportier F model will be available, distinguish able by its larger spindle-shaped grille, which Lexus says is necessary to provide the extra cooling ‘needed for sportier driving’.
