To join a homegroup

1. Log in to Windows 8 or Windows 7 with a specific user account.

2. Open the HomeGroup control panel.

The panel should have a section that shows that the homegroup was detected, as well as a Join Now button.

3. Click Join Now, enter the password, and click Next.

Windows will post a message that you have successfully joined the homegroup.

The homegroup that you joined appears in the Navigation panel of Windows Explorer. From there you can open the context menu  that you can use to modify your homegroup. Homegroups are a major upgrade from the older system of shared folders because they are containers that can provide access to multiple types of content and can provide permissions and streaming capabilities.

Only one homegroup is allowed per network subnet.
