Windows 8 Tile-Based Apps : Photos

Photos begins our discussion of Windows 8’s rich-content tile-based apps. Photos can display photos from your connected devices and your libraries. You can also add accounts of services like Flickr and view any albums you created there. Through Windows Live, Photo will pick up SkyDrive photos. If you’ve connected Live to other photo services, then Photos will show those too. All in a simple to navigate interface.

To access your photos

1. Tap or click the Photos tile on the Start screen .

2. The Photos app displays a Start screen that shows you content from your libraries, devices, and online services .

3. Tap or click the tile of the collection you want to see; Photos displays your artwork as thumbnails .

4. Tap or click the photo you want to see; Photo displays it full screen .

To navigate between albums or photos

• To view the previous or next photo or album, swipe left or right, press the left or right arrow key, click the Back or Forward button, or use the scroll wheel on your mouse.

• Press the Home or End key to move to the first or last album or photo.

• To move one full screen left or right, press the Page Up or Page Down button, or click the page arrow buttons on the left and right sides of the screen .

• Click the Slide Show button to view your photos in a slide show.

To add photos from your phone, camera, or other device

Click Import to import photos from a connected device.

To make Photos a live tile

1. Tap and hold, or right-click, to select the Photos tile on the Start screen.

2. On the Apps bar, click the Turn Live Tile On button .

The Photos tile shows pictures from your currently selected album and rotates the picture every five seconds .

To make a background image

1. Select a picture in Photos that you want to use.

2. Swipe from the bottom edge or right-click to view the Apps bar.

3. Tap or click the Save As button to view its menu .

4. Select the Lock Screen command to have the picture appear on your Lock screen.

5. Select the App Tile command to have the picture appear on the Start screen Photos tile.

6. Select the App Background command to have the photo appear as the background on the Photos screen.

7. Click the Slide Show button on the Apps bar if you want Photos to display the current album as a slide show.

Press the Esc key or tap the screen to end the slide show.


Tip

When you double-click an image in Windows Explorer, the tile-based Photos app opens. If you don’t want this app to open, use the Set Default Programs control panel to choose a different program as a viewer.
