Karl
Lagerfeld wowed the audience at Chanel's Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture show
which took place recently in Paris. The famous fashion designer opted to leave
the looks speak for themselves, cutting back on accessories and jewels
displayed with the designs and focusing on the garments themselves this time
around for a change. He did have one trick up his sleeve that grabbed attention
- his lavish white dresses were paired with couture trainers. He explained why
he decided to bring flat shoes back, stating that historically, women loved
flat shoes: “No jewellery, no handbags, no gloves, no earrings, nothing –
this was all about attitude and silhouette, shape and cut. In the history
of fashion, around 1800 to 1840, women had flat shoes. Even with a ballgown,
they'd wear flat shoes."
Chanel's
couture trainers were handmade by
Massaro and each design took 30 hours to make. The embellished designs are
rumored to cost approximately 3,000 euros when they hit shelves. Karl
spoke on the new designs specifically, revealing that the models were loved up
by how easy to wear the trainers were, especially when they had to tackle the
difficult staircase. Karl said that he thinks the shoes are
beautiful: "I had a feeling the girls would love them. The way they
ran down the staircase - I didn't even ask them, they did it naturally, because
in this kind of shoe, you can do that. Coming down the staircase in
platforms is very difficult and not very beautiful. It gives a new modern
attitude to couture, a flexibility."
