As soon as you start and log in to Windows 8, the Start screen appears, showing a number of app tiles pre-loaded and ready to use. These colorful tiles display the names of popular applications like Mail, Music, Video, Calendar, and Messaging, and you can start an app by simply tapping or clicking its tile.

The tiles for some apps are live tiles, which continually update, showing information like the number of email messages you have to read, the current temperature in your city, the upcoming appointments on your calendar, or the headlines of your favorite news site.

>>>step-by-step: Reviewing Apps

The easiest way to review the apps included by default on the Start screen of Windows 8 Consumer Preview is to log in and swipe or scroll the screen.

1. Touch the screen and swipe to the left, or

2. Move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and click and drag on the horizontal scroll bar to display additional apps.

>>> Go Further: What Apps Do I Have?

When Windows 8 Consumer Preview was released, it included a number of Metro-style apps you may recognize: Camera, Calendar, Mail, Messaging, Music, Photos, People, SkyDrive, and Video.

These apps are preinstalled with the Consumer Preview beta and you will be able to update them through the Windows Store.

The Music and Video apps are from Xbox Live for Windows, which Microsoft is now using as the new entertainment branding for the games, music, and video you’ll play on Windows 8
