Yamaha Super Ténéré

The long-awaited Super Tenere finally arrived in Canada in 2011. Yamaha says that its liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, four-valve parallel twin engine generates more than 80 foot-pounds of torque. A 270-degree crankshaft has an uneven firing order to maximize traction, and dual balancer shafts quell vibration. The side-mounted radiator and a dry-sump lubrication system reduce weight. Traction control, ABS and Yamaha D-Mode variable throttle control to adjust power are all standard features.

The Dorsoduro maxi supermoto has at its heart a claimed 130hp, 90-degree 1,200 cc V-twin engine which employs a ride-by-wire technology, with Sport, Touring and Rain maps available at the push of a button. Suspension consists of fully adjustable 43 mm inverted Sachs fork and laterally-mounted Sachs shock. The available three-stage traction control works in unison with the optional ABS, which can be deactivated via the instrument panel. A 2014 Dorsoduro 750 with ABS will be available this spring. Price is not yet known.

The track-focused S model has an Ohlins shock, 50 mm Marzocchi fork, Marchesini wheels and radial front brake pump, while the Hyperstrada is ready for long-distance duty with a touring screen and seat, center stand and remote rear suspension preload adjuster.

The street-only Strada has cast aluminum rims, Sachs suspension, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, and comes standard with switchable ABS. Although it shares tubular steel frame, removable rear sub-frame, dual upswept exhausts and engine with the Terra, the Strada has a slightly lower seat height and a tire-hugging front fender.

KTM 690 Duke

The name may be familiar but the machine itself is all-new. The KTM 690 Duke uses a 690 cc single with dual spark plugs, ride-by-wire fuel injection and slipper clutch, adding up to a claimed 67 horsepower. The steel trellis frame and die-cast sub-frame are suspended by fully adjustable WP shock and inverted fork. Up front is a 320 mm brake disc gripped by a radially mounted, four-piston Brembo caliper, combined with a 24-0 mm rear disc and Bosch ABS. The Duke will be available in white or black.

KTM 990 Supermoto T

·         Susp. Travel (F/R): 160/180 mm

KTM 990 Supermoto T

The 990 Super Moto ST is powered by a fuel-injected 999 cc LC4- engine with dual upswept mufflers, 17-inch wheels, WP suspension and ABS. KTM classifies the SM T as a super Moto, but its torque-heavy V-twin engine and touring amenities beg for carving up fast roads rather than a tight track. A half fairing, windscreen, hand guards, and generous saddle make it an inviting platform for two full-sized hooligans. New shock preload adjuster and standard soft saddlebags were added to the 2012 model.

Suzuki DR-Z400SM

·         Price: $7,699

·         Engine Liquid-cooled: four-stroke

Suzuki DR-Z400SM

The DR-Z400SM gets its engine, electric start and five-speed transmission from the DR-Z400S dual sport, and a long-travel inverted Showa fork from the RM250. It has a fully adjustable shock with high- and low-speed compression damping. Adapted for super Moto use, the 400SM wears 17-inch wheels and sport tires. On the market for a few years, braking was improved with a 300 mm floating front disc and seat height was reduced in 2006, while a Renthal tapered aluminum handlebar was added five years ago.

TM SMX

TM's track-only supermotos are highlighted by the SMX 4-50, new in 2011, which benefits from the addition of fuel injection and a two-speed ignition mapping switch on the handlebar, with the optional tool to program more mapping curves. The SMX 530 is carbureted, and both SMXs have 17-inch wheels, Marzocchi 50 mm inverted forks and Sachs shocks. Various options, such as a slipper clutch, Brembo brake system, Ohlins shock and 16.5-inch front rim, are available at an extra cost.
