Windows 8 : Internet Explorer 10 - Options and Tools

Desktop IE gives you access to a number of important settings. This section highlights some of the more important ones. To begin with, you probably want to explore the Internet Options dialog box, because it sets the home page, connection types, default behaviors, and a number of advanced features.

To open the Internet Options dialog box

Click the Tools menu and select the Internet Options command from the bottom of the menu. The General tab appears .

To set your home page

1. Enter the page address into the Home Page text box.

Click the Use Current button to set the current page as your home page.

2. Click Apply to set the page and continue making changes, or click OK to set the page and close the dialog box.

• Click the General tab to change IE10’s appearance, how it starts up, and how tabs are displayed, and to delete all personal information from a session upon exit.

• Click the Security tab to set limits on what sites you can connect to.

• Click the Privacy tab to limit actions that are allowed by connected sites. For example, you can turn off geolocation, suppress pop-ups, and turn off toolbars and extensions when in InPrivate browsing mode.

• Click the Content tab to set family safety and content display options, control the use of site certificates, turn AutoComplete on or off, and turn on or off feeds and web slices (a web slice is a subscription technology that pushes content to your browser).

• Click the Connections tab to control your Internet connection, including setting the address of a proxy server, setting up a VPN, and connecting to your local area network (LAN).

• Click the Programs tab to determine which version of Internet Explorer opens by default and how content is handled. You can also use the Set Programs button to change your default browser.

• The Advanced tab has many options that modify rendering, accessibility, multimedia, and security behaviors. Most of these settings are rarely changed in everyday use.

The Command bar moves many of the more popular Internet Options commands onto a menu, where they are easier to view. Here are a few of the most important commands.

To set Page menu options

• Use the Compatibility View command if a website doesn’t load correctly.

• Use the Zoom command to zoom in or out.

• Use the Text Size command to change the font size on your screen.

• Use the View Source command to see the code from which your page was rendered.

To set Safety menu options

• Use the Delete Browsing History command to remove all stored session information.

• Use the InPrivate Browsing command to delete session information for a tab.

• Use the Tracking Protection command to disable geolocation by websites.

To set Tools menu options

• Use the Popup Blocker menu to suppress pop-ups or allow them on a per site basis.

• Use the View Downloads command to view the Download dialog box and access downloads.

• Use the Full Screen command to remove the Desktop IE interface and view only site content.

Press Ctrl++(plus) and Ctrl+–(minus) to zoom in and out.
