2. Using Word Web App
Suppose
you’re on the road, toting your trusty laptop computer so that you can
work on the go. That’s great, but what if you need to open a Word
document you created on your home computer? No big deal, if you saved
the file in a SkyDrive folder. You can open the file right on your
laptop, assuming you have an Internet connection and a web browser.
When you access SkyDrive online, Windows Live makes
the Office Web Apps available. You won’t see them out there, but when
you click a Word document in your SkyDrive folder, Word Web App launches
within your browser and opens the document. In Word Web App, you can
read the document, edit it, print it, copy it, or move it, and download
it to whatever computer you’re currently using.
This section shows you how to open a file and do
other essential tasks in Word Web App. This all works the same whether
you’re opening one of your own documents or a file that someone else
shares with you via SkyDrive. If you share a document with other people,
they can follow these same steps to work with your document on the web.
2.1 Opening a Document with Word Web App
Word does not need to be running when you open a
SkyDrive document with Word Web App. Proceed as follows to open a
document with Word Web App:
1. | Launch your web browser and connect to the Internet.
|
2. | |
3. | On the Windows Live sign-in page, log in to your account.
|
4. | When
your personalized Windows Live home page opens, point to the Windows
Live link (in the top-left corner of the page) to see a list of options,
and click the SkyDrive link, as shown in Figure 10.
|
5. | On the SkyDrive home page, click the shared folder that contains the document you want to view, as shown in Figure 11. A new page opens, showing the selected folder’s contents.
|
6. | Point
to the document’s name. To the right of the document’s name appears a
list of options for working with the document, as shown in Figure 12.
|
7. | Click the document’s name to view it. The document opens in Word Web App, right in the browser window, as shown in Figure 13.
|
8. | To
navigate the document, use the scroll bar on the right edge of the
window, or use the navigation tools at the right end of the Word Web App
toolbar (refer to Figure 20.16).
|
9. | To
close the document, click File; then click Close. Alternatively, you
can click the Close button at the right end of the Word Web App toolbar.
|
To print a document from Word Web App, click File, and then click Print. The Word Web App’s Print dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 14. Select the desired printing options; then click OK.
When viewing a document in Word Web App, you can
search for text by clicking Find on the Word Web App toolbar. The Find
in Document pane opens on the left side of the browser window, as shown
in Figure 15. Click the Search text box and
type the text you want to find; then click the Search button (the
magnifying glass). The pane displays every occurrence of the text; click
an instance to jump to it in the document.
