Windows 8 Explorer : The File System
A disk drive can have one or more volumes, but volumes can have only one file system. The Windows file system is hierarchical and structured like a tree’s canopy . Strangely, though, the top folder of the file system is called the “root,” and each folder is a branch that can contain other folders or files.
Windows 8 Explorer : The Explorer Interface
Windows Explorer opens to display a file tree in the Navigation pane on the left, a Content pane in the middle, and a Display or Preview pane on the right. Figure 1 shows Explorer with its ribbon open.
The business need for Windows Server 2012 : Four ways Windows Server 2012 delivers value for cloud computing

Windows Vista : Working with Digital Media - Tips for Working with Windows Media Player
Outside the new features discussed in the previous few sections, Windows Media Player still performs most of the tasks that we’ve come to associate with the program, including playing media (of course), ripping music from audio CDs, burning tracks to recordable devices, and so on.
Windows Vista : Working with Digital Media - Easy Listening in Windows Media Player 11
Windows Media Player (WMP) is your computer’s one-stop media shop, with support for playing digital music, audio CDs, digital videos, DVD movies, Internet radio, and recorded TV shows; ripping music from CDs; burning files to disc; synchronizing with external audio devices; and much more
Windows Vista : Working with Digital Media - Using Windows Photo Gallery
Digital-image management seems like the kind of thing that ought to be part of the operating system. However, although Windows has had programs such as the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, it has never had a program designed to perform the full range of image-management tasks, from importing and viewing to organizing and burning.
Preparing for Windows Server 2012 : Assessing the readiness of your environment (part 2) - Using the MAP Toolkit
Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit 7.0 is an inventory, assessment, and reporting tool you can use to assess your current IT infrastructure and determine the right Microsoft technologies for your business needs.
Preparing for Windows Server 2012 : Assessing the readiness of your environment (part 1) - Manual assessment
If your current server infrastructure is very small, you can perform a manual assessment by using the documentation that came with your server hardware, viewing and recording server BIOS information, exporting system configuration information using msinfo32.exe, inventorying roles and features using the Get-WindowsFeature cmdlet of Windows PowerShell, and performing similar types of procedures.
Windows 8 : Managing Mobile Networking and Remote Access - Creating Connections for Remote Access (part 2) - Creating a Broadband Connection to the Internet, Creating a VPN Connection
In many respects, broadband connections are much easier to configure than dial-up connections. When you work with broadband, you don’t need to set up dial-up rules or locations. You don’t need to worry about calling cards, ISP access numbers, or redialing preferences, and this makes broadband much easier to work with.
Windows 8 : Managing Mobile Networking and Remote Access - Creating Connections for Remote Access (part 1) - Creating a Dial-Up Connection
The networking component Client For Microsoft Networks enables Windows 8 systems to communicate in a Windows domain or workgroup. Because most workplaces use Windows domains or workgroups and some ISPs don’t, the component is configured for workplace environments and not for ISPs.
Windows 8 : Managing Mobile Networking and Remote Access - Understanding Mobile Networking and Remote Access
Although the underlying technologies are fundamentally different, direct-dial, broadband, VPN, and DirectAccess connections all make it possible for users to access your organization’s network remotely.
Windows Small Business Server 2011 : Configuring Server Backups (part 2) - Modifying a Backup Job
Once you have created a backup job using the Configure Server Backup Wizard, the Tasks list on the Backup And Server Storage page provides controls that enable you to modify the parameters of the job as needed.
Windows Small Business Server 2011 : Configuring Server Backups (part 1) - Creating a Scheduled Backup Job
Alternatively, you can start the Configure Server Backup Wizard by clicking Configure server backup in the Getting started tasks list in the Windows SBS Console.
Windows Small Business Server 2011 : Creating a Backup Strategy
In a large enterprise network environment, creating an effective backup strategy can require a huge investment of time, effort, and money. Backing up a large number of servers typically requires additional third-party software and an extensive amount of specialized hardware. For small business networks, however, the task is usually far less difficult.
Windows 7 : Installing and Replacing Hardware - Installing and Using Multiple Monitors
Windows 7 supports multiple monitors, a great feature first developed for Windows 98. You can run up to ten monitors with Windows 7, but normally, you will use no more than two or three.
Windows 7 : Installing and Replacing Hardware - Adding Hardware
One of the tasks that is most common for anyone responsible for configuring and maintaining PCs is adding and removing hardware. The Control Panel contains an applet designed for that purpose, called Devices and Printers.
Windows 7 : Installing and Replacing Hardware - Upgrading Your Hardware
The single most helpful thing you can do to make your Windows 7 computer run at peak speed is to give it enough system memory. Just as a reminder, your computer uses two types of memory: hard disk space and RAM. RAM holds Windows and the programs you’re actually using, and Windows 7 wants more RAM than Windows XP, but is happy with what works for Vista .
Windows Server 2008 : Compressing Files with compact, Encrypting Files with cipher
The compact command compresses and uncompress files and folders on NTFS drives. The two primary switches you’ll use are /c to compress files and /u to uncompress them. When files are compressed, Windows Explorer displays them with blue text. The following table shows some examples using the compact command.
Windows Server 2008 : Copying Files with copy, xcopy, and robocopy
The output of the robocopy command provides useful information. It shows how many files and folders were copied, whether any files were skipped, whether any failures occurred, the speed of the copy, and more.

The last level of protection deals with the protection of a complete operating system configuration. For this, Microsoft has introduced the Complete PC Backup (CPC), which is available in the Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions.
Windows Vista : Recovering Data (part 2) - Automating data protection
Vista includes two backup technologies: Automatic Backup and Complete PC Backup. Automatic Backup is available in almost all versions of Vista while Complete PC Backup is only available in the more advanced editions.
Windows Vista : Recovering Data (part 1) - Dealing with minor data loss
With the release of Windows Server 2003, Microsoft introduced a new technology called the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Shadow copies or disk snapshots, as they are commonly referred to, are one of the major reasons why people implement shared storage.
Windows Home Server 2011: Monitoring the Network Status with the Launchpad Icon (part 2) - Monitoring Windows Home Server with the Alert Viewer

Preparing for Windows Server 2012 : Planning for Windows Server 2012 (part 1) - Migration scenarios
Migration projects involving servers can be categorized in a number of ways, depending on whether you are deploying a new infrastructure, upgrading or consolidating an existing infrastructure, or implementing a new infrastructure model such as cloud computing.
Windows 8 : Configuring Networking for Mobile Devices (part 2) - Configuring Alternate Private IP Addresses, Connecting to Networked Projectors
Only IPv4 connections have alternate configurations. When you use DHCP with an IPv4 connection, an automatic private IP address is assigned when the DHCP server can’t be reached during startup or when the current IP address lease expires.
Windows 8 : Configuring Networking for Mobile Devices (part 1) - Working with Mobility Settings, Configuring Dynamic IP Addresses
Most mobile devices need more than one network configuration: one for the office, one for home, and maybe another for when the user is traveling. At the office, the mobile device uses settings that are assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server on the corporate network.
